Training Packages What are they?
Training packages outline what an industry has defined as the critical skills and knowledge required by individuals to be competent in employment in that industry. This goes beyond knowing what work is done to actually being able to do the work required. For example, the Forest & Forest Products Training Package lists all the skills and knowledge required by people working in the timber industry in order to perform particular work functions.
According to the Australian National Training Authority, a training package is:
a set of nationally endorsed standards and qualifications for recognising and assessing people’s skills. A training package describes the skills and knowledge needed to perform effectively in the workplace. It does not prescribe how an individual should be trained. Teachers and trainers develop learning strategies – the “how” – depending on learner’s needs, abilities and circumstances. (Australian National Training Authority website.)
Why use training packages?
The benefits of training packages include:
- Qualifications are consistent and nationally recognised, making it easier for students to move between states and territories and for employers to hire people who have worked for other companies or have moved from interstate.
- Students have the flexibility to choose how, when and where the training is undertaken.
- Individuals are assured of being trained and gaining qualifications in areas which specifically suit enterprise needs.
